Song Story
In January of 2009, my church set aside a week to corporately fast and pray. We have come to understand that that fasting can be a way of ministering to the Lord (Acts 13:2). Fasting really is about focusing my entire being on the Lord. When I choose to fast, I am telling my flesh that it is not in charge. I am demonstrating to myself and to God that I am more hungry for His glory than I am for satisfying every whim of my flesh. So fasting is a deliberate time of making my natural self bow to the purposes of God's Spirit, and it is a deliberate time of becoming stronger in my own spirit (Luke 1:80).
Jesus boldly declared, “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life” (John 6:63, NIV). Moses told the Israelites that God had led them in the desert for forty years “to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:3).
On the first morning of our corporate fast, I was just praying to the Lord and expressing my desire for more of Him. As I continued to pray about these things, I sensed the Lord prompting to make these prayers and scriptures into a song that our whole local church could sing as an anthem to the Lord. Amazingly, I wrote the song while driving in my car to our church's building, and then we played it as soon as I arrived. (Yes, that is cool.)
Lyrics
I'm More Hungry
Words and music by John Gabriel Arends
God I'm hungry and I'm desperate like I've never been before
In these days that we are living, I have got to have more
Hear my flesh cry out with my soul for the glory of the Lord
Every sacrifice is worth it, so let Your fire fall
Your Word is a lamp unto my feet
Your Word is what sustains me
I'm hungry for Your presence than for anything
I'm more thirsty for Your Spirit than for anything
I'm more desperate for Your wisdom than for anything
Your Word is life to me
The Spirit gives life, the flesh—it counts for nothing!
The Spirit gives life, the flesh—it counts for nothing at all!
